Online threats – smishing attacks
Seniors, beware of smishing attacks!
Have you heard of smishing? It’s a type of online scam where you receive a fake text message that attempts to get your personal and financial details. The messages often look like they are coming from a bank or other trusted source, but in reality the aim is to steal your data and money. The most common scam is a message that asks you to enter your details or click on a link that may lead to a malicious website.
How to protect yourself?
Do not open links or attachments in suspicious SMS messages.
Never share your personal or bank details via SMS.
If you are unsure whether the message is genuine, check with the sender through an official channel (such as the bank’s phone number).
To help seniors, we have set up the Cyber Safe Senior project, which will, among other results, provide them with information on how to identify and protect themselves from online scams, including smishing attacks.
With our help, you’ll be better able to spot the dangers and avoid the traps set by online scammers.
